...but FUCK!!!!!!!

My head gasket went today in an impressive display of smoke, Oil pishing out the engine and boiling water from the radiator!

Now carless until i can get it fixed so wouldnt be making the meet on sunday if it was still on! And I'm supposed to be moving house over the weekend! :(

So anyone want to buy a Sporting once its all fixed? Was gonna sell it during the summer, but will now need to pay back the parentals the money they will be giving me to get it fixed!

I've been ready to cry about it so many times today! :(

why not just strip it and scrap it? surely that'd be the better option.

Hey man, You still wan't those bit's don't you?

I have a spare engine for £150 :P

A h/g repair only costs about £200. I have had that once before on my old 55s.

Yeah i'll still have them off you, but obviously wont be seeing you immediately!

Its costing me £400ish thats EVERYTHING replaced...head gasket set, rocker gasket set(?), Timing belt stuff, oil filter, oil, new sump, water pump, labour...and anything else that I've forgotten! Cant complain cause it means it should be runnign sweet as a nut when finished!

Then all I need is the parts off you, new brake disks and pads and its good to sell! :)

Awwww maaaannnn!!!! 8-) 8-) 8-)

My engine now sounds the NUTS!!! My mechanic started it up for me last night and I nearly creamed myself! It purrs!!!!

Just got a new sump to go on it on Tuesday and I get to drive her again! I so cant wait!

Had the tiniest wee mark on the head gasket that was letting water into the engine! But kinda glad it happened now even though I am £400 lighter! Oh and the timing belt was gubbed as well...so glad I got it changed just now as well! One of those things I had been putting off!

But....YAAAAAAAYYY!!!! 8-) 8-)

Snap, happened to my mk1 16valver and what a difference when i got it back- bent the valves 4 weeks later

Well I've got it back and everything was fine till this morning...

I have a rather loud rattle between 2000 and 3000 rpm. It did kinda do this before, but not all the time and not when sitting stationary!

Also still got an oil leak! :(

So back to the mechanics we go tonight!

Mine did that, it turned out it was the heat shield over the manifold had rusted away at the bottom, so there was no metal around the bolt, and it was hitting the manifold. Have a look under the car. Just whip it off and see if it makes a difference

Okay...the rattle aint the heatshield, I have taken that off and it still rattles between 2000 and 3000 revs...but isnt as bad once the car warms up! :?

And you will all be pleased to know that the oil leak is sorted! :) As suggested by Sporting_16v, it was indeed the Sump needing sealed properly after being replaced.

So its all cool for school...apart from the rattle and the interior clock still needing replaced! 8-) 8-)

Ha, bet thats why mine used to leak like a leak....my solution was to flog :(

yeah Puntos end up with sumps like seives!

And the problem with putting a new one on is there isnt a gasket so you need to make sure its sealed properly!

See, after the HG went we replaced the rocker cover gasket...but the leak persisted.

Always asumed the worst, replaced the odd gasket here and there, cleaned up and found a leak a few days/weeks later. Never got round to doing the sump, if only I'd known at the time lol!

Could it be the exhaust manifold? Check for cracks and escaping gas. with the bonnet up (and the engine cold), start her up, hold rattly revs and just feel for leaks.

Could be a gasket or the manifold itself is cracked. If it is the manifold, i have one (with a surprisingly small amount of rust, looks nearly new).

with the sump leaking was there a time where it was so low to nearly be empty?

i know it aint no 200sx but could maybe be the bottom end cos mine started make a rattling noise between 2000k and 3000rpm

ill get my vid

To be honest with you, yes there is a chance because there was very litle oil came out when the sump was taken off...but I also lost ALOT of oil when the HG blew and blasted a hole in the sump because of the pressure.

My mechanic had said it could be the bottom end, but the noise is more rattly than the noise from your 200sx...and seems to be coming from the top of the engine! :?

Tappet rattle?

Can't comment untill i hear it though. Will if be fixed before the st andrew meet?, wait, your on holiday then? darn.

PuntoSporting
23rd April 2007, 03:38 PM
You could have heard it last weekend!

I reckon it could be tappet rattle, only thing being it seems to have got louder and last for longer since the whole HG fiasco! And I could swear that when my mechanic let me hear the car running after the HG had been fixed but was still waiting on a new sump it didnt have the rattle...the whole engine just sounded really smooth!

So I reckon its something they have had to disconnect, which would probably point at the exhaust...but as I said it does seem to come from the top of the engine! If I knew my way around an engine I could probably give a better diagnosis!

I'll see if I can get a pic of a Sporting engine bay and I'll circle where the noise seems to be coming from!

You never said you had problems last weekend?

here you go!

Emmm....green circled area for where the noise sounds like its coming from! Or at least beneath that area!

Pink area is the oil breather pipe I'm still looking for! ;)

That's the inlet manifold. Hmm, could be a leak but i very much doubt that would cause a rattling noise (more of a whistle). There are no moving parts in there at all to cause that noise.

I would rule out the tappets as they should be silent at speed.

A bit further to the right is the throttle body. is there any noise coming from that?

PuntoSporting
23rd April 2007, 04:25 PM
No idea!

I didnt think there were moving parts in there, thats why i have been confudled! Could still be tappets because they are silent once I get over 3000rpm! Its almost like an exact thing in every gear...from 2000 to 3000 I get a rattle...and mostly only when accelerating...the noise seems to be non existant when I allow the revs to drop down through this range from higher up! :?

I've only ever really looked at it myself rather than have someone sitting holding it at steady revs!

I had thought about the Throttle Body to be honest due to the noise only really occuring when I'm accelerating and not when slowing down, and will have a look at it since my K&N has been put on facing upwards rather than down behind the battery!

Obviously wont be tonight though! I'll let you know how I get on!

My 16valver became really tappety when i broke it.
i thought it was the tappets needing adjusting but they are hydralic so you cant.

Turns out i slightly bent a couple of the valves, well so Arnold clark said.

Thats what i got for coming back from perth at 1**mph
